The EU is accelerating the digital transformation of freight transport with the eFTI Regulation
The European Union is launching a new phase of digitalization in the transport sector. The eFTI Regulation (Electronic Freight Transport Information) has come into force and will lay the groundwork for a complete transition away from paper documents by 2027. Logistics industry participants will now be able to exchange data through secure digital platforms. Key benefits of the new regulation include:
Reduced costs for managing documentation.
Improved monitoring of transport infrastructure.
Better analysis of environmental impact.
The European Commission is already developing additional technical requirements, set to take effect in 2025. This marks a significant step toward streamlining and accelerating logistics processes within the EU.
Updated Mobility Package Regulations for Transport Companies in 2025
EU Mobility Package: Changes Starting in 2025 Beginning in 2025, new rules under the EU Mobility Package will come into effect, impacting driver working conditions and logistics operations:
Mandatory license for vehicles weighing 2.5–3.5 tons.
Tachograph inspections extended to cover the last 56 days.
Implementation of Smart Tacho 2 to record border crossings and loading/unloading activities.
Ban on taking regular weekly rest (over 45 hours) in the vehicle cabin.
Option to extend daily driving time by 1–2 hours to return to base (must be documented).
New tachographs must be installed by August 18, 2025, enabling remote monitoring of up to 25 parameters.
Companies will need to adapt, improve driver conditions, and implement TMS (Transport Management Systems) to comply and avoid fines of up to €30,000.
The EU is launching the Import Control System 2 (ICS2)
Starting in March 2025, the European Union will implement the new Import Control System 2 (ICS2). This system aims to enhance supply chain security and improve the monitoring of imported goods. ICS2 will cover all modes of transport: sea, air, rail, and road. Its primary function will be to provide early notification of shipments entering EU countries, enabling the swift identification of potential threats and risk prevention. The new regulations will affect all participants in the supply chain, including freight forwarders, carriers, and importers. The introduction of ICS2 marks a step toward the full digitalization of customs procedures in the EU, making the logistics process more transparent and efficient.
